Teaching

Co-responsible for the vocational bachelor degre "Biologie appliquée aux écosystèmes exploités"

Responsible or co-responsible for the courses:

Teaching in the courses:

My statistics classes are supported by DataCamp, an intuitive learning platform for data science with R, Python, SQL, and more. DataCamp’s learn-by-doing methodology combines short expert videos and hands-on-the-keyboard exercises to help learners retain knowledge. DataCamp offers 350+ courses and supports education around the world for free: datacamp.com/groups/education.

Skills

Areas of expertise:

  • individual and population responses to environmental change,
  • evolution of life-history traits (dispersal, reproduction strategies, aging),
  • ecophysiology (bioenergetics, oxidative stress).

Statistics and modelling:

General and generalized linear models, mixed-effects models, quantitative genetics (R, SPSS). Frequentist and bayesian approaches.

Dynamic energy budget (DEB) models.

Matrix population models, spatially-explicit individual-based models.

Languages: R, MATLAB, Octave, basics of Python.

Use of active pedagogy, cooperative learning and flipped classroom methods.

Writing of scientific articles, reports and scientific blogs.

Oral presentation to a scientific or lay audience, discussions with the general public, classroom visits in high schools.

Technical skills:

Monitoring of mammals' and birds' populations: identification (visual and by sound), catching and manipulation, dissection and identification of ecto- and endo-parasites, blood taking, subcutaneous and intra-peritoneal injections.

Metabolism: doubly-labelled water, spectrophotometry, extraction of carotenoids and HPLC quantification.

Genomics: DNA extraction and quantification, RFLP, RT-qPCR on DNA.

Data extraction and management: linked databases (R, Access), spatial data and geographic information system (QGis, R), images analysis (ImageJ).

Foreign languages: English fluent, good working knowledge of German and Italian.

Research interests

Individual variation in life-history strategies of migratory fishes: energetic and physiological mechanisms.

Focussing on the individual level, Charlote Récapet seeks to understand the maintenance of the diversity in life-history strategies observed within populations. She is in particular interested in the role of energy metabolism and oxidative stress in mediating life-history tradeoffs and individual responses to environmental variation. Her research, by combining field, experimental and modelling approaches, test the mechanisms  but also the demographic and evolutionary consequences of life-history diversification.
